    Standard Cable Assemblies : Overview

Standard Assemblies Make Measuring, Ordering and Installing a Breeze.

CableRail™ Standard Cable Assemblies are an attractive, affordable, low maintenance and easy-to-install railing infill option for homes and offices with a view. Our standard, prefabricated assemblies are made from 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" diameter, high strength, weather-tough, type 316 stainless steel cable and are designed to replace commonly used metal or wood railing pickets. The assemblies are laced horizontally through holes drilled in the intermediate posts of your railing frame and then tensioned at opposite end posts with special QuickConnect-SS™ fittings. The result is railing infill that is not only extremely durable and attractive but virtually invisible, allowing beautiful, unimpaired views.

The prefabricated assemblies are sold in a wide range of standard lengths (from 5 ft to 70 ft in increments of 5 ft) that can be trimmed to a finished dimension in the field.

Assemblies may be installed on new or existing wood or metal railing frames in exterior, interior, residential and commercial settings. They're also an ideal choice for fences and trellises. Please note that CableRail™ standard assemblies should never be used for lifting, hanging or other high-load applications.

1/8" cables are commonly used for residential and light commercial projects. 3/16" cables are utilized in commercial jobs or residential applications where a heavier cable is desired. 1/4" cables are chosen for high traffic commercial settings.

Complete installation instructions, frame requirements, 3-part specifications and detail drawings are available. Plus, if you ever have any questions or need assistance, we have a toll-free information line, 1-800/888-2418.

We hope you will find all of the facts and figures you need to make CableRail™ Standard Cable Assemblies the number one choice for your next railing project.

Standard Cable Assemblies : Key Features & Benefits

Special End Fittings Are Easy To Install & Conceal

Assemblies begin with the Threaded Terminal fitting already fastened to one end of the cable when it comes from the factory. Attach the terminal to an end post using a Flat Washer and a special Washer-Nut and adjust tension in the line by spinning and torquing the Washer-Nut. Available in two sizes: 4-1/4" for metal posts and 7-1/2" for wood posts. Material: type 316 stainless steel.

Threaded terminal <click to enlarge>
The other end uses the new all stainless QuickConnect-SS™ fitting. The fitting attaches to the cable by hand in the field without special tools. One-way jaws allow the cable to easily slide through in one direction but automatically grab and lock-on when the cable is released. Just slip the cable through, pull it tight and cut-off the excess. Colored or Stainless Steel End Caps give a clean finish detail. 1/8" size: 1-1/8" long with 3/8" diameter body. 3/16" and 1/4" size: 1-5/8" long with a 17/32" diameter body. Material: all stainless steel.

Standard Cable Assemblies : Installation Instructions

Installing the Standard Cable Assembly System is easy.

Important Note: Building codes vary by city and county; therefore, following the installation and railing design instructions detailed on this website does not necessarily ensure code compliance in all areas. So, before starting your project, be sure to consult your building department on local requirements for using and installing cable railings.

Tools Needed:

  • Pencil
  • Measuring Tape
  • Electric Power Drill
  • Drill Bits (see chart in step 2 below)
  • Hammer
  • Cable Cutters or Cut-Off Disk
  • Vise-Grip Pliers
  • 7/16" Wrench
  • Electric Grinder
  • Hack Saw or Electric Reciprocating Saw
  • Cable Lacing Needle
  • Safety Glasses
  • Work Gloves
cable assembly installation <click to see the larger version>

Just follow these simple steps:

step 1 <click to see the larger version> Mark drill hole locations. For safety, space cables no more than 3 inches apart and have a post or vertical spacer at least every 3 feet. See this page for frame requirements.
step 2 <click to see the larger version>

Drill holes in one end post for Threaded Terminal fittings, holes in the other end post for the QuickConnect-SS™ fittings and holes in all other intermediate posts. As an option to drilling a large hole all the way through the post for the QuickConnect-SS™ fitting, we recommend counterboring the fitting, see the counterbore diagram for details.

1/4" 7/16" 5/16" 9/16"
step 3 <click to see the larger version> (WOOD FRAMES ONLY)
Insert Protector Sleeves into post holes wherever the cable enters at an angle and has a tendency to cut into the wood (e.g. stair transition posts or outside faces of double corner posts). Tap in until flush. See Protector Sleeve details.
step 4 <click to see the larger version> Pass the Threaded Terminals through the end post and attach a Flat Washer and Snug-Grip™ washer nut. Spin the Snug-Grip™ washer nut until about 1/4" of thread is exposed on the end (note: when spinning the nut you will encounter significant resistance as the special Snug-Grip™ threads engage; hold the terminal with Vise-Grip pliers if necessary). For angled terminations such as stair posts, see details for wood frames or steel frames.
step 5 <click to see the larger version>

Using a Cable Lacing Needle (optional) lace the cable through the intermediate posts and through the opposite end post. Slip a Flat Washer and QuickConnect-SS™ fitting on to each loose cable end and continue sliding until the fittings rest against the post face. Do not attempt to pass the lacing needle through the QuickConnect-SS™ fitting.

step 6 <click to see the larger version> Hold the QuickConnect-SS™ fitting with one hand and pull the cable tight with the other. The QuickConnect-SS™ automatically locks when you release the cable.
step 7 <click to see the larger version> Using a 7/16" wrench, tighten the Snug-Grip™ washer nuts on the Threaded Terminals until you cannot flex the cables more than 4 inches apart. Hold the shaft of the Threaded Terminal with Vise-Grip pliers while tightening. See recommended cable tensioning sequence below. Important note: if using electric or pneumatic tools to tighten the washer nuts, you must spin the nuts very slowly--no faster than you can spin with hand tools--otherwise the washer nuts will quickly heat-up causing the threads to possibly gall and seize.
step 8 <click to see the larger version> After all the cables are fully tightened, trim-off the excess threads on the Threaded Terminal fittings as close to the Snug-Grip™ washer nut as possible. Use a hand hack saw, reciprocating saw or electric grinder with a cut-off disk. Touch-up sharp ends with a grinding disk.
step 9 <click to see the larger version> Using cable cutters or an electric grinder with cut-off disk, trim the excess cable from behind the QuickConnect-SS™ fittings. Grind flush the exposed cable ends with a grinding disk.
step 10 <click to see the larger version> Snap-on End Caps over the exposed QuickConnect-SS™ fittings and Snug-Grip™ washer nuts. You're done. Enviro-Magic® Cleander can be applied for lasting protection of stainless steel cable and parts.

Frame Checklist & Important Notes

  • Building codes vary by city & county; therefore, following the installation and railing design instructions detailed in this web site does not necessarily ensure code compliance in all areas. So, before starting your project be sure to consult your building department on local requirements for using and installing cable railings.
  • Be sure to review all of the installation instructions and frame requirements & details pages on this site.
  • Carefully plan the location of all end and corner posts to allow for proper clearance from walls and to maximize cable run lengths.
  • To ensure proper tensioning, straight runs of cable (no turns, dips or rises) should not exceed an 70 ft assembly. Cable runs that do have corner bends or dips should not exceed a 40 ft assembly and should not have more than 2 corners or bends per run.
  • End and corner posts (the cable load bearing posts) must be of the recommended minimum sizes noted in the frame requirements & details pages.
  • All posts/verticals should be spaced a maximum of 3 feet apart.
  • Cables should be spaced a maximum of 3 inches apart.
  • All posts must be securely fastened to the cap rails and to the deck joists/structure.
  • CableRail™ standard assemblies should never be used for lifting, hanging or other high-load applications.
  • If you have any questions, please call us at 1-800/888-2418 or 1-510/893-9473.

    Standard Cable Assemblies : Maintenance

CableRail™ Care & Maintenance

The protective chromium oxide film on the surface of stainless steel gives it superior corrosion resistance. Properly maintained stainless steel provides excellent luster, strength and durability. In most applications stainless steel won't rust or stain even after many years of service, but it's NOT rust or stain proof. When stainless comes in contact with chloride salts, sulfides or other rusting metals, it can discolor or even rust and corrode. With proper care and maintenance, however, stainless steel can remain beautiful and functional for years to come, even when it's exposed to marine environments, polluted surroundings, salted highways, or anywhere it might be exposed to corrosive elements.
  • Clean stainless regularly with soap and warm water. Never clean with mineral acids or bleaches.
  • Never leave stainless in contact with iron, steel or other metals. This can cause rust spots or corrosion.
  • Always remove stains or rust spots as soon as possible with either soap and water or a brass, silver, stainless or chrome cleaner.
  • Never use coarse abrasives like sandpaper or steel wool on stainless. Use synthetic Scotch pads instead.
  • Periodically inspect cable assemblies for proper tension and re-tension as necessary. This is important.

    Standard Cable Assemblies : Ordering

How to Order CableRail™ Standard Cable Assemblies

Now you can order on-line; see below.
  1. Carefully Review: Read all of the installation instructions, frame recommendations and details pages on this site.
  2. Section Frames: Divide your railing frame into sections by determining which corner and end posts will be the cable termination posts. Remember that straight runs should not exceed 70 feet and runs with bends (2 bends at most) should not exceed 40 feet.
  3. Determine Lengths: Measure the outside lengths of each of your sections from step 2 and select the cable assembly lengths that will fit each section. Be sure that the assemblies are at least 1 foot longer than the length of the section.
  4. Calculate Quantities: The number of assemblies depends on your railing design. Remembering that each horizontal cable is a separate assembly and that the cables should not be spaced further than 3 inches apart, calculate the quantities needed for each of your assembly lengths.
  5. Check Accessories & Tools Count up all the protector sleeves, rubber grommets, beveled washers, stainless end caps, cutters, drills, saws, lacing needles and cleaner you may need.
  6. Place Your Order: Go to the parts: assemblies and parts: accessories & tools pages and place your order on-line or contact your local CableRail™ dealer. Of course you can always call us at 1-800-888-2418 if you need assistance. It normally takes 7 to 14 days for us to process and pack your order and then up to an additional 7 days for UPS shipping, so be sure to allow 2 to 3 weeks for final delivery.  Special expedited processing and shipping options may be available for an additional charge; please ask our sales staff for details. Discounts are available to licensed contractors; confirm when you place your order.
